Sunday – Frequently Asked Questions

WE KNOW THAT ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT THINGS ABOUT VISITING A NEW CHURCH IS KNOWING WHAT TO DO… WE HOPE THESE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HELP!

WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE FOR SUNDAY WORSHIP?

Worship service begins at 10:30 A.M. and our sanctuary is located in the worship center building (the west building). We invite you to come early to enjoy some light refreshments and to allow us to show you around. If you enjoy Sunday School, class starts at 9:30 A.M. in the Family Life Center (the East Building). Worship service typically last about 75 minutes.

WHICH BUILDING SHOULD I GO TO FOR WORSHIP?

Our campus has two buildings and Sunday worship and Sunday school are held in different buildings. As you drive onto the campus, the building entrances will be toward the north. Signs are located in front of each building designating the Worship Center (west building) and the Family Life Center (east building).

HOW DO I GET TO THE SANCTUARY?

Our sanctuary is accessible through the north entrance, using the double-doors under the canopy. There are typically refreshments on the patio and there are restrooms in the foyer. The inside double-doors lead directly into the sanctuary.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

We live in beautiful Yuma, Arizona, where the weather is usually nice. Most folks come dressed accordingly, although you will nearly always find a wide variety of clothing from shorts and tee-shirts to suits, ties and dresses. We are not concerned about what you look like as much as we are about having the opportunity to worship with you!

I HAVE CHILDREN, WHAT WILL THEY DO?

We have a nicely equipped nursery and toddler room, where paid childcare attendants will take excellent care of children through the age of four. Children in the nursery and toddler care will have a bible lesson geared specifically toward their age group and may have a craft and a snack (toddlers). Nursing mothers are welcome to enter the nursery during feeding times.

Children who are grades first through fifth have their own worship time in the Family Life Center with music, teaching, and activities geared specifically for them. At least once monthly they are asked to participate in the main worship service and so join in family worship, leaving just before the sermon for a special children’s church time.

The nursery and children’s church are located in the family life center. Closed-circuit televisions with a monitor are in the worship center foyer that allow viewing of the children’s areas during worship.

While we recognize that it may be difficult to leave your children in our care – especially on a first visit – we kindly ask that you remain mindful of how you child’s cooing may be a distraction to those around you.

DO I NEED TO GIVE AN OFFERING?

Our concern will never be about an amount that you give or if you have given at all. That is an issue that is best left between you and the Lord. We do track offerings for tax purposes – but, that’s all.

DOES DESERT GRACE SPEAK IN TONGUES?

We do not speak in tongues during worship services.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COMMUNION?

Our church celebrates the sacrament of communion (also known as the Lord’s supper or Eucharist) during various Sundays throughout the year. We do not schedule communion at any regular interval but, choose to celebrate the sacrament as the Lord leads us. Most Sundays, we will not serve communion. When we do, we use grape juice – always unfermented. Each participant will receive his or her own elements, although we may occasionally dip the bread into the juice. You will never share the same cup with another.

There is no requirement that you be a member of Desert Grace or of a Church of the Nazarene. However, we do expect that you will not partake if you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior or if you heart is not in a proper place in accordance with scripture. You do not need to be concerned if you choose not to participate, as you will not be alone and no one is paying attention to your specific situation.

WILL YOU ASK ME TO FILL OUT A FORM?

Yes, we do ask all of our first-time guests to complete a small card that asks for basic information. This helps us to keep track of our friends – new and old – and isn’t intended to be intimidating. We typically like to give a special gift to our first-time guests as a “Thank You” for worshipping with us. But, if you are uncomfortable with filling out a card, we understand and will not hold it against you if you decide not to do so.

DO YOU HAVE A VAN OR BUS THAT CAN COME GET ME?

If you need assistance with transportation, we will be glad to help you find a ride to church, either using our church van or by finding a Desert Grace worshipper who lives near you and would be willing to bring you with them to church. Either way, please do not let a lack of transportation keep you from coming to church!
